Beneath Behaviours: Condensed Version Summary

This condensed session explores behaviour through a developmental and attachment-informed lens. Rather than asking “How do we stop this behaviour?”, we ask “What is this behaviour communicating?”

The session covers:

  • What children are trying to tell us with their behaviours

  • How immature brain development impacts impulse control and cause-and-effect understanding

  • The role of nervous system states in shaping behaviour

  • Why children cannot access sophisticated skills when dysregulated

  • Why regulation must come before reasoning

  • The importance of co-regulation and adult proximity

  • Practical scripts and strategies for responding to challenging moments

The key message is that behaviour is communication. When we respond with curiosity, regulation and skill-building rather than correction and punishment, we strengthen the very capacities children are still developing.
